Hippocrates of Chios was a famous thinker from ancient Greece.

He lived a long time ago, around 470 BC. He was born on the island of Chios. At first, he worked as a merchant. Life was not always easy for him. He was robbed by pirates or officials. This might be why he moved to Athens. In Athens, he became a leading mathematician. He may have studied with a man named Oenopides of Chios. He was also influenced by Pythagorean ideas from the island of Samos.

Hippocrates changed how we learn about shapes. He wrote a book called *Elements*. This was a very organized geometry textbook. It used basic building blocks called theorems. These theorems helped other math experts build new ideas. Most of his book is lost today. Only one famous part remains in a work by Simplicius. This part talks about the area of shapes. He also used letters to name points. For example, he used ABC for a triangle. This made math much easier to write down.

He spent time working on very hard puzzles. One puzzle was called squaring the circle. This means making a square with the same area as a circle. Hippocrates could not fully solve this task. However, he did something very important. He proved a curved shape could have the same area as a flat shape.

He also looked at the duplication of the cube. This is a problem about finding a cube root. Later, a man named Ferdinand von Lindemann proved squaring the circle was impossible. He showed this in 1882 using math.

Hippocrates also had clever ways to solve problems. He used a method called reduction. This means turning a hard problem into a general one. Once the general problem is solved, the original one is solved too. He also used a way to show a mistake. This is called proof by contradiction. These ideas helped math grow for a long time. His work laid the foundation for Euclid. Euclid wrote his own *Elements* around 325 BC. That book became the standard for many centuries.

Finally, Hippocrates looked up at the night sky. He was an astronomer who studied the stars. He tried to explain the Milky Way and comets. He thought these were optical illusions. He believed moisture in the air bent light. He thought light rays came from our eyes. This was a very different idea from what we know now. He thought a planet near the Sun caused light to bend. His ideas show how much people wondered about the world.
