He was born on the island of Chios. He was once a merchant. Later, he moved to Athens. There, he became a famous mathematician.

Hippocrates wrote a very important book. It was called *Elements*. This book was a textbook about geometry. Geometry is the study of shapes. His book was very organized. It used basic building blocks of math. This helped other thinkers for many years.

He also used letters to name shapes. For example, he might call a triangle ABC. This made math easier to explain. He worked on a hard task called squaring the circle. This means making a square with the same area as a circle. He could not finish this task. But, he did prove something new. He showed a curved shape could have the same area as a flat shape.

Hippocrates also studied the stars. He looked at comets and the Milky Way. He had many unique ideas about light. He thought light rays came from our eyes. He also thought light could bend through moisture in the air.
