A mathematician is someone who uses math to solve problems. They look closely at numbers, data, and shapes. They also study how things change and how space works. Some mathematicians focus on things we can see in the real world. These people are called applied mathematicians. They use math for science, engineering, and even business.

There are two main ways to study math. Pure mathematics is the study of abstract ideas. These ideas might not have a direct link to the real world. Applied mathematics uses math to solve concrete problems. For example, an actuary uses math to study risks like sickness or injury. They help companies plan for things like insurance or pensions.

History shows us many famous mathematicians from long ago. Thales of Miletus was one of the very first. He used logic to solve geometry problems. Pythagoras of Samos started a school where people believed math ruled the universe. Archimedes was another giant in the field. He found ways to measure the area of a circle. He also studied the volume of a sphere.

Other great thinkers changed how we see the world. Euclid wrote a book called Elements to explain geometry. Apollonius studied curves like ellipses and parabolas. In Alexandria, Hypatia was the first woman mathematician recorded by history. During the Middle Ages, scholars in the Islamic world made huge progress. Al-Khawarizmi was a famous mathematician from this time. In India, Brahmagupta explained the use of zero and negative numbers.

Today, many mathematicians work at universities. They study many topics during their first years of college. Later, they pick one special area to master. Some mathematicians teach classes or lead research in laboratories. Others work in many different jobs. In the past, mathematicians also had other roles. Luca Pacioli helped start accounting. Robert Recorde worked as a physician.
