Feminism is a group of movements and ideas. It aims to make men and women equal. This means equality in politics, money, and social life. Many people believe modern societies are patriarchal. This means they favor the male point of view. This can lead to women being treated unfairly. Feminists work to fix these problems. They fight against gender stereotypes. They also work for better jobs and education for women.

History is often described in waves. The first wave happened in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These women fought for the right to vote. They also wanted to own property and sign contracts. The second wave began in the 1960s. These activists wanted social and legal equality. The third wave started around 1992. It focused on individuality and diversity. Some say a fourth wave started around 2012. This wave uses social media to fight harassment.

Many people helped start these movements. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote a famous book. She argued that women needed equal rights. In the United States, leaders like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were very important. They also worked to end slavery. In England, Emmeline Pankhurst was a famous leader. She helped shake society into a new pattern. In Germany, Clara Zetkin worked for women's rights through socialism. She also helped start International Women's Day.

Different countries had different goals. In New Zealand, women won the right to vote in 1893. In the United States, the Nineteenth Amendment passed in 1919. This gave women the right to vote in all states. In Egypt, Hoda Shaarawi led the Egyptian Feminist Union in 1923. In Iran, women fought for equality in education and marriage. In the United Kingdom, the Married Women's Property Act of 1870 helped women own things. These laws changed how women lived in many places.

Today, feminism has many different branches. Some focus on legal changes, while others focus on social roles. There are schools of thought called liberal, socialist, and radical feminism. Modern activists often use a concept called intersectionality. This means they include all women and LGBTIQ+ people. They want to make sure no one is left out. Some newer forms of feminism focus on specific groups. They work to make sure all voices are heard.
