Intersectionality is a way to understand how different parts of a person's identity work together. These parts can include race, gender, class, religion, and disability.

Instead of looking at one thing alone, this idea looks at how they overlap. This overlap can create unique experiences of privilege or unfair treatment. For example, a person might face many different types of discrimination at once. These are not just separate problems added together. They combine to create a new and more complex situation. This framework helps people see the whole picture of a person's life.

This way of thinking works by looking at systems of power. It does not just list a person's traits like age or sexuality. Instead, it looks at how systems like racism or sexism interlock.

When these systems meet, they can shape how much power a person has. A person's experience with one factor might change because of another factor. For instance, how race affects someone might depend on their gender or class. This helps researchers move past simple answers to find deeper truths. It aims to help people work toward social and political fairness for everyone.

Many thinkers helped build this idea long before it had a name. In 1851, Sojourner Truth gave a famous speech called "Ain't I a Woman?" She spoke about the different lives of Black and white women. Other early writers like Anna J. Cooper also shared these ideas. Cooper wrote in 1892 that Black women faced a complex mix of challenges. In 1947, Pauli Murray used the term "Jane Crow" to describe this. Later, the Combahee River Collective formed in 1974 to discuss these interlocking issues. They spoke about how race, class, and gender all influence life at once.

The actual term "intersectionality" was coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. She used it in her legal studies to show how the law often fails people. In a 1976 case, DeGraffenreid v. General Motors, Black women faced unfair treatment. The court looked at race and gender as two separate things. Because of this, the court did not see their combined struggle.

Crenshaw showed that ignoring these overlaps can lead to injustice. Since then, the idea has continued to grow and change. Scholars like T. Batista say it is still evolving today.

Today, intersectionality is a very important part of many studies. It has greatly influenced modern feminism and gender studies in schools. Many people use it to understand power and how to fix unfair systems.

Some critics think the idea is too broad or hard to use in research. They worry it might reduce people to just their demographic facts. However, many still find it helpful for seeing the world clearly. It connects to how we think about identity and fairness every day. This helps us move toward a more nuanced understanding of everyone.
