Third-wave feminism is a movement for women's rights. It began in the early 1990s. This movement grew from the work of older feminists. Those earlier groups are often called the second wave. The third wave focused on being unique. It celebrated diversity and different identities.

This movement helped women define feminism for themselves. It was a way to keep making progress.

Many ideas helped shape how this movement worked. One big idea was called intersectionality. This term was introduced by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. It explains how women face different layers of unfair treatment. These layers can come from race, class, or gender.

Another idea was sex-positivity. This was a reaction to older views on sexuality. The movement also used personal stories to teach others. Sharing these stories helped women see they were not alone.

History shows us how this movement started. In 1991, a woman named Anita Hill spoke to the Senate. She said a judge named Clarence Thomas had harassed her. This was a very big moment in the news.

In 1992, Rebecca Walker wrote an article. She used the term "third wave" in her writing. She wanted to show that the work was not done. She felt feminism was a movement that still needed strength.

Music and art were also very important parts of this time. In Olympia, Washington, a group called "riot grrrl" began. This was a feminist punk subculture.

They used a "do-it-yourself" style to make art. They made small books called zines to share their views. Bands like Bikini Kill were very famous in this scene. They wanted to give girls a voice in music. This helped young women feel empowered to act.

Today, we can see how these ideas spread. The movement moved beyond the United States. It reached people in Europe and Latin America.

In South Asia, women used the internet to talk. They used blogs and e-zines to reach a global audience. In Africa, activists used these ideas to help girls go to school. This movement helped change how the world thinks about gender roles.
