The feminist movement is a series of social and political efforts. These groups work for reforms on many women's issues. They fight against inequality between men and women. Some goals include equal pay and the right to vote. Other goals involve maternity leave and reproductive rights. The movement also looks at domestic violence and sexual harassment. These priorities can change depending on the country or community.

Many people study the movement through four main stages called waves. The first wave began in the 1840s. It focused on things like education and the right to property. It also sought political equality and marital freedoms. The second wave started in the 1960s. This wave looked at social and cultural inequalities. It included women of color and women from different social classes. The third wave began in the 1990s. It focused on diversity and women's influence in media and politics. The fourth wave started in the 2000s. It examines how different systems of power affect marginalized groups.

History shows that women have been writing about these ideas for a long time. For example, the poet Sappho lived in Ancient Greece around 615 BC. She wrote about sexuality during a time when men mostly controlled the written word. In 1791, Olympes de Gouges wrote the "Declaration of the Rights of Woman" in France. She argued that women are born free and equal to men in law. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft published "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman." She believed no society could be moral if half the people were held down. These thinkers helped lay the groundwork for later organized movements.

In the United States, the movement grew through many important events. Some people point to 1832 as a starting point for early activism. In 1837, 139 anti-slavery societies were formed across the nation. The Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 is also a key moment. Elizabeth Cady Stanton said this was the first women's rights convention in the world. Attendees there wrote the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments. This document outlined their ideas and political strategies. In 1888, the International Council of Women was established in Washington, DC.

These movements connect to many different parts of the world. In 1905, Russian activists founded a union for women's equality. They fought for the right to vote and co-education. In 1931, the All-Asian Women's Conference was held in Lahore. This meeting showed how women could network across different divides. Today, feminism includes many different types of activism. It covers everything from labor rights to protecting the planet. People continue to work for fairness in every nation and community.
