For much of history, women rarely had this right. Even in places with democratic systems, women were often left out. In ancient Athens, only adult male citizens could vote. Women, slaves, and foreigners could not participate. However, some groups had special roles in the past. In Medieval Germany, high-ranking abbesses could vote in national assemblies.

In North America, Iroquois women held a deciding vote in councils. They even chose the ambassadors who discussed peace. These examples show that the idea of women having a voice is not new.

Many people worked hard to change laws so all women could vote. They organized long political campaigns to change how people thought.

These supporters worked to change rules and pass new laws. They often formed international groups to help each other. One important group was the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. It was founded in 1904 in Berlin, Germany. These movements happened in waves over many years. The first wave lasted from 1893 to 1930. It mostly covered English-speaking countries and parts of Europe.

In Australia, South Australia allowed women to vote and run for parliament in 1895. The whole Australian Federal Parliament gave women the vote in 1902. In the United States, Wyoming granted the vote in 1869. Utah followed in 1870. Many other countries joined in later. Canada gave women the vote in 1917. Germany did so in 1918. The United States granted this right in 1920. The United Kingdom finished this in 1928.

Some countries took much longer to grant these rights.

In France, women could not vote until 1944. Greece did not have equal voting rights for women until 1952. In Switzerland, women could not vote at the federal level until 1971. Some places even had rights that were taken away. The Kingdom of Hawai'i had universal suffrage in 1840, but it was removed in 1852. In the United States, New Jersey allowed some women to vote from 1776 to 1807. These stories show how much work was needed to make things fair.

Today, voting is a normal part of many governments. The second wave of suffrage happened between 1930 and 1970. This period covered most of Latin America and much of Sub-Saharan Africa. After World War II, the United Nations encouraged all countries to let women vote.

In 1979, a special agreement called the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women was made. This agreement says voting is a basic right for women. Currently, 189 countries are part of this convention. This helps ensure that more people can help choose their leaders. It connects the hard work of the past to the world we live in today.
