Anti-racism is a way of working to stop racial prejudice. It involves making sure everyone has equal opportunities. This can happen through personal choices or through big changes in how a country works. People might look at their own biases or fight unfair systems. Major modern movements include Black Lives Matter. These efforts aim to create a fairer world for all people.

In the 1500s, some people began to speak out against cruelty. Antonio de Montesinos was a friar who spoke against Spanish leaders in Hispaniola. He called their treatment of native people cruel and tyrannical. This led to new laws, like the Laws of Burgos. Later, Bartolomé de las Casas also questioned how people were treated. In 1537, Pope Paul III issued a document called Sublimis Deus. This document said that different races are rational human beings with rights.

Religious groups also played a big part in this history. In 1688, German immigrants in Pennsylvania wrote a petition against slavery. Later, Quakers like John Woolman and Anthony Benezet worked to end slavery. They helped their group move away from the slave trade. In 1787, a group called the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was formed. It included people like William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson. They worked to change laws in the British Parliament.

Many different leaders fought for equality in different ways. Frederick Douglass was a black abolitionist who argued for the equality of all people. John Brown was a man who was willing to die for the rights of others. During the late 1800s, things became very difficult in the United States. New laws called Jim Crow laws were made to keep people apart. In 1911, leaders met at the First Universal Races Congress in London. They discussed how to improve relations between different races.

Science has also helped show that racism is not based on facts. In 1836, Friedrich Tiedemann used measurements to show that race does not change brain size. Charles Darwin wrote in 1871 that humans are very similar in their structure. Modern science shows that there is more genetic variety within a group than between groups. The Jena Declaration in 2019 stated that the biological idea of human races is invalid. This means that racial categories are based on racism rather than science.
