Anti-racism is a collection of ideas and political actions. These efforts aim to counter racial prejudice and systemic racism. Systemic racism refers to unfairness built into the structures of society. Anti-racism involves deliberate actions to create equal opportunities for everyone. This can happen on an individual level or a systemic level. Individuals may acknowledge personal privileges or work to change their own racial biases. On a larger scale, people work to change unfair systems of discrimination. Major modern efforts include the Black Lives Matter movement and workplace anti-racism programs.

History shows that early debates about human rights began in Europe. During the colonization of the Americas, Europeans used enslaved people as unpaid workers. However, some clergy members began to question this treatment. In December 1511, a Dominican friar named Antonio de Montesinos spoke out. He rebuked Spanish authorities in Hispaniola for their "cruelty and tyranny" toward natives. This led to the Laws of Burgos and the New Laws of 1542. In 1537, Pope Paul III issued a papal bull called Sublimis Deus. This document confirmed that indigenous people are rational human beings. It stated they have rights to freedom and private property.

Religious groups also led significant anti-racist initiatives. In 1688, German immigrants in Pennsylvania issued an anti-slavery petition. Later, Quakers like John Woolman and Anthony Benezet worked to end slavery. They persuaded fellow Quakers to divest from the Atlantic slave trade. This gave the Quaker denomination moral authority in the abolitionist movement. In 1783, 300 Quakers petitioned the British Parliament against the slave trade. In 1787, the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was formed. It included nine Quakers and three Anglicans like William Wilberforce. These groups lobbied more effectively to change British law.

Many individuals fought for equality through the abolitionist movement. Some abolitionists believed in general freedom but did not see all races as equal. Others, like Frederick Douglass, argued explicitly for the equality of all people. John Brown was willing to die to protect the rights of those in slavery. However, progress faced setbacks in the United States. After Reconstruction ended, the period from 1890 to 1920 saw the rise of Jim Crow laws. During this time, the Ku Klux Klan grew in strength. In 1911, the First Universal Races Congress met in London. This event allowed leaders to discuss ways to improve interracial relations.

Political ideologies like socialism have also shaped anti-racism. Karl Marx advocated for radical abolitionist measures in 1864. Vladimir Lenin argued that socialism would enforce equality for all nations. He believed in the right of oppressed nations to self-determination. Leon Trotsky also advocated for the independence of Black populations in South Africa. In the 1930s, Trotskyists helped establish Black trade unions in Transvaal. Modern socialist groups often link anti-racism to economic equality. They may connect reparations for slavery to broader economic changes.

Science has played a vital role in debunking racial myths. In 1836, Friedrich Tiedemann used brain measurements to refute claims of intellectual inferiority. He argued these claims were based on prejudice rather than science. In 1871, Charles Darwin noted that human structures resemble each other closely. He doubted that any single character was constant for an entire race. Later, Franz Boas argued that human behavior is determined by culture. He rejected the idea that biology determines behavior. These scientific shifts helped move society away from racial models.

Modern genetics has provided the final evidence against racial categories. The Jena Declaration was published by the German Zoological Society in 2019. It rejects the idea of human "races" as a biological concept. Scientific evidence shows that genetic variation is smaller between populations than within them. There are no specific genes that match conventional racial categories. Therefore, the concept of race is based on racism rather than fact. This scientific understanding continues to shape how we view human equality today.
