Gender equality is the idea that everyone should have the same chances.

This means people have equal access to resources and opportunities. It does not matter if a person is a man or a woman. People should have the same ability to join the economy. They should also have the same power to make big decisions. This includes valuing different needs and goals equally.

Equality does not mean that everyone must be exactly the same. It means that everyone gets the same rights and protections. This is a major goal for groups like the United Nations. They want to ensure that girls and boys enjoy life equally.

Achieving this goal involves many different steps and practices. Some people use gender equity to help reach the main goal. Others look for gender parity to measure if things are balanced. Gender equality can look like equal opportunities for everyone. It can also mean equal outcomes, which is called substantive equality. To make this happen, many countries must change their laws. They must also work to stop unfair treatment of women. This includes closing the gender wage gap in jobs. It also means making sure women can own property and get credit.

History shows that people have worked for this for a long time. In 1405, Christine de Pizan wrote about this in a book. She argued that prejudice against women was not logical. Later, a group called the Shakers practiced equality in America. In 1788, Joseph Meacham and Lucy Wright led them together. They created leadership teams where men and women worked as partners. Each elder for men had a female counterpart. They kept this balanced way of leading for over 200 years.

Many important events helped move society forward. In the late 1800s, the suffrage movement helped women gain the right to vote. This movement also changed property rights for married women. In 1979, the United Nations adopted a big set of rules called CEDAW. This is often called an international bill of rights for women. In 1995, the Beijing Declaration set more principles for equality. Other rules, like the Maputo Protocol, protect rights in Africa.

These laws help make sure women can participate in politics. They also help protect women and girls during wars.

Today, we can see these changes in our daily lives. Many jobs are now open to both men and women. For example, men are more likely to work in childcare or nursing.

In many homes, parents share the work of raising children. This helps women have more freedom to pursue careers. A large study in 2015 showed that most people care about this. In 37 out of 38 countries, people said equality is important. This shows that the world is moving toward a fairer future for everyone.
