Egalitarianism is a school of thought in political philosophy. It focuses on the idea of social equality for all people. Many people who follow this idea believe that all humans have the same fundamental worth. This means everyone should receive equal treatment and rights under the law.

This way of thinking is very important to many modern movements. It has helped shape ideas like feminism and civil rights. It also connects to international human rights and the Enlightenment. People use these ideas to dream of a much fairer world.

There are different ways to practice these ideas. One way is called equality of opportunity. This means everyone should have access to the same resources and education. The goal is to give everyone a fair chance to succeed in life. Another way is called equality of outcome. This focuses more on making sure results are fair for whole groups.

Some people also talk about legal egalitarianism. This uses laws to help people achieve their civil rights. These different paths all aim to reduce unfair gaps in society.

History shows many different versions of these beliefs. In the United States, the 14th Amendment says no state can deny any person equal protection. The English Bill of Rights from 1689 also talks about fundamental rights. During the French Revolution, people used the motto of equality. The Declaration of Independence also says that all men are created equal.

Some thinkers, like John Locke, are seen as founders of these ideas. Even the Tunisian Constitution of 2014 says men and women are equal. These documents show how the idea has grown over time.

Many different groups have their own specific focus. Feminism is a social movement that uses these ideas to focus on gender. Some philosophers, like Oscar Horta, believe we should even care for animals. They argue we should not exploit them because they are often worse off than humans. In economics, some people look at socialism and communism. These groups often talk about how wealth and power can be shared.

Even management styles can be egalitarian by sharing decisions among a whole team.

Religions also have deep connections to these ideas. In Buddhism, the Buddha taught that a person's birth does not make them better. He said that good actions matter more than a person's family line. In Islam, the Quran says that people are made into different tribes so they may know one another. It teaches that the most noble person is the most righteous. Some Christians also use holy verses to support human rights. They believe that all people are united and equal.
