Impartiality

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Impartiality is a very important idea about being fair.

People also call it evenhandedness or fair-mindedness. This principle helps people make good decisions. It means decisions should use objective criteria. Objective criteria are facts that do not change based on feelings. You should not let bias or prejudice change your mind. Bias is when you favor one person over another. This idea helps make sure things are just for everyone.

How does being impartial work in real life?

It means you do not pick a side. You do not prefer one person for improper reasons. Instead, you look at the actual facts of a situation. This way, the choice is based on truth. It keeps things from being one-sided or unfair. People use this rule to stay neutral. This helps everyone trust the person making the choice.

Some groups have special rules to stay impartial.

For example, the BBC uses this idea in its work. They follow a foundation called Reithianism. This helps them avoid media bias when they broadcast news. They want to make sure their news is fair to all. This is a way to keep their reporting balanced. It is a key part of how they work.

Laws in the European Union also protect this right.

The Charter of Fundamental Rights mentions impartiality. It says every person has a right to good administration. This means agencies must handle affairs fairly. They must also act within a reasonable time. The Charter also says people have a right to a fair trial. This trial should be public and happen in a reasonable time.

A fair trial needs a very special group.

This group is called an independent and impartial tribunal. The law says this group must be established before the trial. Being independent means they do not take orders from others. Being impartial means they do not pick a side. These rules help make sure the legal system works well. They protect the rights of every person in the Union.
