Law commission

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A law commission is a special group. A government sets it up to study laws. These groups are independent. This means they work on their own. They look at how laws work in a specific place. They suggest ways to change or fix them. This process is called law reform.

These groups have several important jobs. Sometimes laws are very hard to read. The commission can write new versions that are clear. They can also group many laws together. This makes them easier to study. They look for laws that are outdated. They also find laws that are no longer used. These old laws are called obsolete or spent laws.

Different places use different names for these groups. People in the United Kingdom use the name law commission. In the Commonwealth, they use law reform commission. In the United States, they use law revision commission.

Many countries have their own groups. There are commissions in India and Fiji. There are also groups in Australia and Nepal.

Some groups have long histories. The Law Reform Commission of Hong Kong started in 1980. The New Zealand Law Commission began in 1985. The Jersey Law Commission was made in 1996. In Canada, things changed many times. A group was created in 1971. It was replaced by a new group in 1997. That group ended in 2006.

These groups help keep rules useful. They look at legislation to make sure it works. Some groups have a broad job. Other groups have a very narrow job. In the United States, the House of Representatives has a special office. This is the Office of the Law Revision Counsel. These groups help societies stay organized. They make sure the law stays current for everyone.
