John Rawls was a very important American philosopher. He lived from 1921 to 2002. He studied big ideas about law and politics. Many people call him one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century.

His work helped change how we think about fairness. In 1971, he published a famous book called "A Theory of Justice." This book started a new era for political philosophy. He wanted to find a way to balance freedom and equality. He believed these two things could work together perfectly.

To explain his ideas, Rawls used a special thought test. He called this the "original position." Imagine a group of people must choose rules for a new society. There is one big rule for this test. It is called the "veil of ignorance." This means no one knows who they will be in the new world. You do not know your race, your gender, or your age. You do not even know if you are rich or poor.

Because of this, you will try to make rules that are fair for everyone. You would not pick rules that hurt a specific group. You might end up being part of that group yourself!

Rawls had a very interesting life before he became a teacher. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the second of five sons. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was an infantryman in the Pacific. He saw very difficult and violent things during the war. These experiences changed how he saw the world and his faith. After the war, he went back to school at Princeton University. He earned his PhD there in 1950. He later studied at Oxford University in England.

Rawls spent much of his career teaching at great schools. He taught at Cornell University for a few years. He also taught at MIT for a time. Most of his career was spent at Harvard University. He taught there for almost forty years. He helped train many other famous thinkers. His ideas were so strong that they are used in courts today. Judges in the United States and Canada often look at his work. Politicians in the United Kingdom also study his theories. In 2008, many professors voted him the most impactful scholar.

His ideas cover many different parts of life. His first book focused on how to share things fairly. His second book, "Political Liberalism," looked at how people with different religions can live together. His third book, "The Law of Peoples," looked at justice between different countries. He even won the National Humanities Medal in 1999. President Bill Clinton gave him this award. The award recognized that helping the less fortunate is a logical way to run a society. Rawls showed us that being fair is not just a good idea, but a smart one.
