He spent his whole career at the University of Oxford. He also taught at other schools like Harvard and NYU. People consider him one of the most influential thinkers of his time. He was born in 1942 in Chengdu, China. His parents were doctors who taught medicine in hospitals there. He moved back to the United Kingdom when he was a baby.

Parfit spent a lot of time thinking about ethics. Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong. In his book, *Reasons and Persons*, he looked at self-interest. This is the idea that we should only care about ourselves. He argued that being only selfish can sometimes be a bad plan. For example, it might be smart to be a trustworthy person. Being trustworthy helps you make good deals with others later. He wanted to find better ways for people to make choices.

He also wrote a second book called *On What Matters*. In this book, he talked about how we should treat others. He believed that moral questions have true and false answers. Parfit thought that rich people have a big duty to help the poor. He said we could use money to stop suffering or blindness. He even thought we should protect the future of all humans. He believed our choices today affect people living far in the future.

One of his most famous ideas was about personal identity. This is the study of what makes you "you."

He used science fiction ideas to explain his thoughts. He talked about a machine called a teletransporter to test his ideas. Parfit believed there is no single "self" inside a person. Instead, he focused on what he called "Relation R." This means our memories and our character stay connected over time. Even if we change, these connections keep us going.

Many other thinkers have discussed his big ideas. Some people, like Roger Scruton, disagreed with his methods. Scruton thought his puzzles were too simple for real life. Other thinkers, like Mark Johnston, disagreed with his views on the self. They believed that being a person matters in a special way. Even with these disagreements, Parfit's work changed how people think. He helped us wonder more about our choices and our lives.
