John Rawls was a famous thinker. He was an American philosopher. This means he studied big ideas. He thought about law and right and wrong.

Rawls wrote a big book in 1971. It was called "A Theory of Justice." He wanted to find a way to make society fair. He called this idea "justice as fairness." He believed everyone should have equal rights. He also thought we should help people who have the least.

To explain this, he used a thought test. He called it the "original position." Imagine you must pick rules for a new world. But there is a catch. You do not know who you will be in that world. You do not know your race or your wealth. You do not know if you are smart or strong.

Rawls said you would pick fair rules. You would not pick rules that hurt certain groups. You might be in that group! This helps make sure everyone is treated well. His work changed how we think about fairness today. Many people in law and politics still study him.
