The school was different from other schools of that time. It did not use harsh punishments. Instead, it used a system of fines. The school also taught science and modern languages. Anna taught many subjects to the students. She taught reading, religion, history, and geography. She even wrote plays for her students to act out. One student called her the "mother of his mind."

Later in her life, Anna wrote about politics and war. In 1812, she published a book called *Eighteen Hundred and Eleven*. This book criticized Britain's role in the Napoleonic Wars. Many people did not like this book. Because of the negative reviews, she stopped publishing her work in public.
