Hazlitt once said he still remembered the taste of barberries from his time in North America. As a young man, he attended a school called Hackney College. There, he studied many subjects like Greek, Latin, math, and history. This school taught him to think for himself and to value the rights of all people.

Becoming a writer and thinker was a long journey for him. After school, he spent much time studying deep ideas about the mind. He read many famous thinkers from England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. He wanted to understand how people act in a society. In 1805, he published a major book called "An Essay on the Principles of Human Action." In this work, he tried to show that humans are not just naturally selfish. He believed the mind was an active force that could help make the world better.

Hazlitt was part of a very famous circle of friends.
