As Southey grew older, his political ideas changed quite a bit. When he was young, he was a radical who wanted big changes. He even talked about starting a new community in America with Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Later in life, he became more conservative. This means he began to support the government and the traditions of Britain. Because of this change, some other poets were not happy with him. The poet Lord Byron often mocked him in his own writing. Byron thought Southey had changed his views just to get money and status.

Even though some people were mean to him, Southey stayed busy. He received a government pension in 1807 to help him write. In 1813, he became the Poet Laureate, though he said he did not like the job. He was also a very kind man to others. He helped the family of his friend Coleridge when they were left alone.

He wrote about many things, including the bad conditions in early factories. He was worried about children working in those factories. He believed that the government should help people through education and public works.

Southey's work had an impact on many people around the world. His biography of Horatio Nelson was very popular and even became a film.

His poems were also admired by famous writers like the Russian poet Pushkin. Pushkin even translated some of Southey's poems into Russian. In his final years, Southey struggled with dementia. He died on March 21, 1843. He was buried in a churchyard in Keswick. His friend William Wordsworth wrote the words for his memorial.
