Many people call him "The Father of Children's Literature." This is because he turned children's books into a successful business. Before his time, books made just for kids were not very common. He wanted to make reading feel like a fun game. He believed that play could help children learn and behave well. This new way of thinking changed how books were made for young readers.

Newbery created books that were very special to hold and look at.

In 1744, he published "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book." This book was small so a child could carry it easily. It had a bright, colorful cover to grab a child's attention. Sometimes, a person could buy a toy along with the book. For two extra pence, a buyer received a red and black ball or a pincushion. This was a very new idea in the world of publishing.

Newbery's career began with hard work and learning. He was born in 1713 in Waltham St Lawrence, England. As a young man, he taught himself many things. He became an apprentice to a printer named William Ayers when he was sixteen. Later, he started his own business in Reading in 1740. By 1743, he moved his shop to London. He set up his shop near Devereux Court under the sign of the Bible and Crown.

He published about five hundred books during his life.

About one-fifth of these were stories for children. He published ABC books, magazines, and novels. One of his most famous books was "The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes." This story was so popular it had 29 different editions. He also published science books using a character named "Tom Telescope." These books helped teach science to young gentlemen and ladies through lectures.

Newbery was a very wealthy and helpful man. He made money from books and from selling a medicine called Fever Powder. He used his wealth to help writers who were having a hard time. Famous writers like Samuel Johnson and Oliver Goldsmith received his help. His success even allowed his son, Francis, to attend Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Today, his name lives on through the Newbery Medal. This prize was started in 1922 to honor great children's books.
