People call him the "Father of Children's Literature." This means he helped make books for kids a big business. Before him, books for children were not very common. Newbery wanted kids to enjoy reading. He believed reading should feel like a game or play.

In 1744, he made a book called "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book." It was small so kids could hold it easily. The cover had bright colors to catch their eyes. You could even buy a toy with the book. For a few extra coins, you got a red and black ball.

Newbery made many kinds of books. He made books about science using stories. He also made popular tales like "The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes." These stories often showed how hard work leads to a good life.

He was a very successful man. He used his money to help other writers. Today, people still honor him. The Newbery Medal is a special prize for great children's books. It was named after him in 1922.
