He also wrote for a magazine named *The Student*. People admired his skill with words and his many different poems. He even won the Seatonian Prize for his religious writing.

Smart’s writing process involved many different styles and themes. He was a master of Latin and Greek from his school days. He often wrote poems in a style called blank verse. This means he used a steady rhythm without rhyming every line. He also wrote a funny play called *The Hilliad*. This was a mock epic, which is a story that pokes fun at serious tales. He even wrote a comedy called *A Trip to Cambridge*.

Smart’s life began in a place called Shipbourne in Kent, England. He was born on April 11, 1722, to Peter and Winifred Smart. His childhood was spent around the large Hall-Place estate.

He went to Maidstone Grammar School to study hard. Later, he moved to Durham to continue his education. He also spent time with the Vane family at Raby Castle. These early years helped him learn the languages he used later.

Smart spent many years studying at Pembroke College in Cambridge. He arrived there in October 1739 as a sizar. A sizar was a student who helped with chores for others. He worked hard and won several important scholarships. On June 10, 1742, he won the Craven scholarship for classics. He also became a Master of Arts in 1746. However, he struggled with money and ran up large debts. This led to him living in a debtors' prison later in life.

Even during his hardest times, Smart created beautiful art. He is famous for two major works called *A Song to David* and *Jubilate Agno*.
