He is best known for being a very busy writer of songs. During his life, he wrote between 6,500 and 10,000 hymns. Many of these songs are still sung in churches today. Some of his most famous works include "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today." He also wrote "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" and "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing." His songs helped spread new religious ideas to many people through music.

Charles grew up in a religious family in Epworth, Lincolnshire. His father, Samuel Wesley, was a priest and a poet.

Charles went to Oxford University to study. While he was a student, he started a special prayer group in 1727. His brother, John Wesley, joined this group in 1729. Other students gave the group nicknames like the "Holy Club." They were called this because they were very disciplined. They focused on studying the Bible and living a holy life. This group eventually included another famous man named George Whitefield.

In 1735, Charles became a priest in the Church of England. That same year, he and his brother John sailed to America.

They traveled on a ship called The Simmonds to the Georgia colony. Charles worked as a chaplain at Fort Frederica on St. Simon's Island. However, the settlers there did not welcome him very much. He left the Georgia colony in August 1736 and returned to England. He never went back to live in that part of America.

In 1738, Charles had a very important religious experience. He felt a renewal of his faith on May 21.

This event changed how he wrote his poetry and songs. He and John began traveling across Britain to preach to people. Because some churches would not let them in, they preached in open fields. They helped lead the Methodist Revival during this time. Charles married a woman named Sarah Gwynne in 1749. They lived in Bristol and later moved to a house in London.

Charles Wesley had a large family with many children. Some of his children, like Samuel and Charles junior, were very talented musicians.

Samuel Wesley was even called "the English Mozart" because he was so good at music. Charles stayed very loyal to the Church of England his whole life. He did not want the Methodist movement to break away from it. He died in London in 1788 at the age of 80. A memorial stone marks his place in a London churchyard.
