Before Watts, many churches sang the Psalms from the Bible. The Psalms are a collection of songs from long ago. Watts wanted to create new poetry for worship. He wrote "original songs of Christian experience." He also found a way to rewrite the Psalms. He wanted them to sound like the New Testament. This made the old songs feel fresh for his time. His work helped many other poets follow his path. This included famous writers like Charles Wesley and John Newton.

Watts had a very interesting life in England. He grew up in a home with strong religious views. His father was even sent to jail for his beliefs. Because of his views, Watts could not go to Oxford or Cambridge. Instead, he went to a school called the Dissenting Academy. He spent much of his life in a village called Stoke Newington.
