Many Christians call him the "Prince of Preachers" because of his skill. He was a leader in the Baptist tradition. He defended specific religious beliefs from the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. Spurgeon often spoke against new ideas in the Church of his day. He was known for his direct and plain way of speaking. His goal was to help people think about the teachings of Jesus Christ.

He began his ministry very young in a small cottage. By age 19, he became the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London. This was a very large congregation for a young man.
