John Bunyan was a famous English writer and preacher.

He is best known for writing a book called The Pilgrim's Progress. This book uses a story to explain religious ideas. It became a very important model for other writers to follow. Many people consider it one of the most important books in English. In fact, 1,300 editions were printed by the year 1938. He wrote nearly sixty different titles during his life. Many of these were expanded versions of his sermons.

Bunyan's life changed many times as he grew up. He was born in 1628 in Elstow, Bedfordshire. His father was a tinker who mended pots and pans.

At age sixteen, Bunyan joined the Parliamentary Army. He served for three years during the English Civil War. After his service, he returned to his trade as a tinker. Later, he married and became very interested in religion. He joined a group called the Bedford Meeting. This group met at St John's church in Bedford. He eventually became a preacher for these people.

His religious beliefs led to a very difficult time. In 1660, the monarchy was restored in England. This change meant that nonconformist groups had less freedom. Bunyan was arrested for preaching even though it was against the law. He was brought before a magistrate named Sir Francis Wingate. The law said he could not hold meetings outside the main church. Bunyan refused to stop his preaching. Because of this choice, he spent twelve years in prison. He stayed in the Bedford County Gaol for most of that time.

Even in prison, Bunyan stayed very busy with his writing.

He wrote a book about his own life called Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. He also began working on his most famous work, The Pilgrim's Progress. While he was in prison, his wife Elizabeth worked hard to support their family. She even made shoelaces to earn money. Bunyan was released from prison in 1672. He spent his later years as a popular author and pastor. He lived a more comfortable life after his long time in jail.

Bunyan's work still connects to the world today. His stories helped shape how people write about journeys and faith. He died at the age of 59 while traveling to London.
