Many people valued his skill and his bright mind.

Cowley began writing very early in his life. At age ten, he wrote a story called Tragicall Historie of Piramus and Thisbe. He invented a new way to write using six-line stanzas. This was a huge feat for such a young boy. At age thirteen, he wrote an elegy for Lord Carlton. By age fifteen, he was already a famous writer. He even wrote a play called Loves Riddle when he was sixteen. He also wrote a long poem about King David. This poem was called the Davideis. He wrote many different kinds of stories and poems.

His life changed when the Civil War began in 1642. Cowley supported the royalist side during this hard time. He was a student at Trinity College, Cambridge. However, the Parliamentarians removed him from his position in 1643. He moved to Oxford to find new friends. Later, he followed the queen to Paris for twelve years. This was a time of exile for the royal family. During these years, he worked very hard for them. He traveled to places like Scotland and the Netherlands. He even helped pass secret letters between the king and queen. He used special codes to keep these messages safe.

Cowley had a unique way of writing special poems. He studied the works of a poet named Pindar. He tried to copy Pindar's style in the English language. Even though he made some mistakes, his style was very important. These poems are now called Cowleyan Odes or Pindarics. Other famous poets like Wordsworth used his ideas later.

He also wrote a history of the Civil War. Most people thought he destroyed his war poem. But a scholar named Allan Pritchard found it in 1973. This allowed the full poem to be read again.

In his later years, Cowley loved science and nature. He moved to a house near Chertsey to be alone. He spent his time studying plants and reading books. He even wrote about the coca plant in his Latin work. Cowley wanted to help start a group for science. This helped lead to the start of the Royal Society. Sadly, he died after catching a cold one summer evening. He was working on his farm when he got sick.
