George MacDonald was a famous writer and a minister from Scotland.

Many people call him the father of modern fantasy writing. He wrote magical books like *Phantastes* and *The Princess and the Goblin*. He also wrote many short fairy tales. MacDonald said he did not write just for children. He wrote for anyone who was "child-like," whether they were five or seventy-five years old. His stories helped make ordinary things like doors and windows feel magical.

MacDonald's life had many different parts. He studied chemistry and physics at King's College in Aberdeen. Later, he trained to be a minister at Highbury College. He served as a pastor at Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel. His sermons were very special because he preached about God's universal love. He believed that everyone could be made good again. Because of these ideas, his pay was once cut in half. He eventually left his job in Arundel in 1853.

His family history was full of many interesting people. He was born in Huntly, Scotland, in 1824. His family had many scholars and readers. One uncle was a famous collector of fairy tales. His grandfather helped publish epic poems about Celtic mythology. MacDonald also faced many hard times with his health. He had trouble with his lungs and often traveled to find fresh air. Sadly, a lung disease called tuberculosis took the lives of many of his family members.

MacDonald was a very important friend to other writers. He was a mentor to Lewis Carroll, the writer of *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*. MacDonald gave Carroll advice that helped the book get published. He was also friends with famous poets like Walt Whitman and Longfellow. His fantasy stories changed how people wrote stories. Famous authors like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Madeleine L'Engle were all influenced by him. C.S. Lewis even wrote MacDonald into one of his own books.

In his later years, MacDonald lived in a beautiful place in Italy. He lived on the Riviera dei Fiori for twenty years. He even started a place called Casa Coraggio, which means "Bravery House." It became a famous center for art and reading. He spent much of his time there writing fantasy books. MacDonald died in 1905 in England. He was buried in Italy alongside his wife, Louisa, and two of his daughters. His life left a huge mark on the world of stories.
