He was a poet, a playwright, and a translator. In 1668, he became England's very first Poet Laureate. This was a special title for a top poet. He was so important that people called his time the Age of Dryden. A writer named Sir Walter Scott even called him "Glorious John." Dryden's writing helped define a whole era of English literature.

Dryden learned many skills at school that helped his career. At Westminster School, he studied rhetoric, which is the art of making strong arguments.

He also practiced translation every week. This helped him learn how to move ideas from one language to another. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated at the top of his class in 1654. These studies gave him the tools to write many different kinds of works. He could argue a point or tell a beautiful story.

As a professional writer, Dryden did many different jobs. He wrote plays for the theater to earn money for his family.

His plays included comedies like "Marriage à la Mode" and tragedies like "All for Love." He also wrote poems to celebrate big public events. One famous poem, "Annus Mirabilis," described the Great Fire of London in 1666. He even wrote "satire," which is a way of teasing or mocking people through writing. He used this skill to poke fun at other writers like Thomas Shadwell.

Dryden's life was not always easy or peaceful. In 1679, some men attacked him in a dark alley in London.

He survived the attack, but it was a scary moment. Later in life, his politics changed his career. After the Glorious Revolution, he did not take new oaths to the monarchs. Because of this, he lost his official jobs. He had to live by the money he made from his writing alone.

One of Dryden's greatest loves was translating old books into English.
