Godwin's journey into big ideas started with his early education. He studied at the Dissenting Academy in Hoxton. There, he learned from famous teachers like Andrew Kippis. He studied many different ways of thinking about the world. He learned about the scientific methods of Isaac Newton. He also studied the psychology of John Locke. These lessons helped him form his own unique views. He eventually moved from being a minister to a writer. He wanted to use reason to explain how the world works.

His life began in a very religious home. He was born in Wisbech in 1756. He was the seventh child in a large family. His parents were very strict about their religious beliefs. His father, John, was a minister. William even studied to become a minister himself. He studied under a teacher named Samuel Newton. This teacher was very strict with his students.
