He was a historian, an economist, and a philosopher. An economist looks at how money and goods move through a country. A philosopher studies big ideas about how people should live. He was also a very important writer for many different journals. He lived a long life of study and writing. His work changed how people thought about many different things.

Mill followed a path of constant learning and work. He was born in Angus, Scotland, to a shoemaker and a small farmer. His mother wanted him to have a great education. He studied at the Montrose Academy and the University of Edinburgh. He even trained to be a minister in the Church of Scotland. Later, he moved to London in 1802 to focus on writing. He spent many years editing journals and writing about many subjects.

One of his biggest projects was a book about India. He spent twelve years writing "The History of British India."

This book was published in 1817 and became very famous. He was the first person to divide Indian history into three parts. These parts were Hindu, Muslim, and British. He used many written records to find his information. However, he never actually traveled to visit the country of India himself.

Mill held many important jobs during his life. He became a friend of a thinker named Jeremy Bentham. He also worked for the East India Company for many years. In 1830, he became the head of an office in London. He earned a salary of 1,900 pounds per year at that time. His salary was even raised to 2,000 pounds in 1836. He also wrote a famous book on economics in 1821.

Some of Mill's ideas are still talked about today. His book on India was very influential, but many people disagree with it. Some thinkers, like Amartya Sen, have criticized his work. They say his views were not fair to the people of India. He also had a very famous son named John Stuart Mill. John Stuart Mill became a well-known philosopher who studied ideas of freedom. James Mill's life shows how one person's writing can change the world.
