As a child, Macaulay was very smart. Some people called him a child prodigy. He went to school in Hertfordshire. Later, he went to Trinity College at Cambridge. He won many prizes for his hard work. He was very good at learning languages. He taught himself German, Dutch, and Spanish. He was also fluent in French. He studied law and became a lawyer in 1826. He loved reading many different books.

Macaulay traveled to India to work from 1834 to 1838. He served on the Supreme Council there. During this time, he wrote a famous plan for education. He wanted schools to teach in English. He thought this would help people learn Western ideas. He believed English would be a useful tool. He wanted to create a group of people who could act as helpers between the British and the Indians. This plan changed how schools worked in India for a long time.

He also worked on making new laws in India. He was a leader of the Law Commission. He helped create the Indian Penal Code. This set of laws was finished after the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Many other countries used these laws later. Some places like Pakistan and Malaysia still use parts of them today. These laws were very powerful and lasted a long time. They even influenced laws in many British colonies.

Even though he did much, people had different ideas about him. Some people in India used the term "Macaulay's Children" to describe people who liked Western culture more than their own. Others thought his ideas about education helped some groups find power. He lived a very busy life with many roles. He was a writer, a lawyer, and a leader. When he died in 1859, he had a very large funeral.
