Herbert Macaulay was a very important person in Nigerian history. Many people call him the founder of Nigerian nationalism. This means he was one of the first leaders to fight for the rights of Nigerians. He was born on November 14, 1864, in Lagos. His parents were part of a group of people who had returned to Nigeria from Sierra Leone. His father, Thomas Babington Macaulay, started the first secondary school in Nigeria.

Macaulay was a man with many different skills. He studied to be a surveyor and a civil engineer in England. He also became a graduate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. Besides building and measuring land, he was a talented musician. He earned certificates for music and for playing the violin. He even helped bring the first films to Nigeria by inviting film companies to Lagos.

As he grew older, Macaulay changed from a professional worker into a political activist. He did not agree with how the British ruled the Lagos Colony. He believed the British were not always acting in the best interest of the local people. In 1919, he helped local chiefs win money after the government took their land. He also fought against new taxes that he thought were unfair.

In 1923, Macaulay did something very big for his country. He helped start the Nigerian National Democratic Party, or NNDP. This was the very first political party in Nigeria. His party won many elections in 1923, 1928, and 1933. He used a newspaper called the Nigerian Daily News to share his ideas with everyone. People even gave him the nickname "Wizard of Kirsten Hall" because he knew so many secrets.

Life was not always easy for Macaulay. He had some legal troubles and was once sent to prison for two years. Some historians believe his trials were not fair and that the government was against him. He also faced hard times in his personal life when his wife died. Despite these challenges, he remained a powerful voice for his people. He died on May 7, 1946, leaving behind a large legacy.
