Herbert Macaulay was a very busy man from Lagos, Nigeria. He was born in 1864. He was a surveyor and an architect. This means he measured land and designed buildings. He was also a gifted musician. He could play the violin very well.

Later in life, Macaulay became a political leader. He did not like how the British ruled Nigeria. He wanted more rights for his people. He fought to help local chiefs keep their land. In 1923, he started the NNDP. This was the first political party in Nigeria.

Macaulay used newspapers to share his ideas. He also helped bring films to Nigeria. People called him the "Wizard of Kirsten Hall." This was because he knew many secrets.

He faced some hard times too. The government once sent him to prison. They said he used money that was not his. Some people think the trial was not fair. Even so, he is remembered as a founder of Nigerian nationalism.
