He is known as a very important classical economist. This means he studied how money and goods move through a country. He worked alongside other great thinkers like Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus. Ricardo helped people understand how wealth is made and shared. His ideas changed how governments think about trade and money. Today, many people still study his work to understand the world.

Ricardo had many big ideas about how nations should trade. He believed in a concept called "comparative advantage." This means a country should focus on making things it is very good at. Then, it can trade those things with other nations. He thought this kind of free trade helped everyone. It could make goods cheaper for all people to buy. He also believed that trade was always helpful for every nation. Even if one country is better at everything, trading still helps.

Ricardo's life began in London in 1772. He was born into a successful Sephardic Jewish family. His father, Abraham Israel Ricardo, was a stockbroker. David started working with his father when he was only 14. When he was 21, he married a woman named Priscilla Anne Wilkinson. This marriage caused a big problem with his family. His father disowned him because of his religious choices. David had to become independent and build his own wealth.

He became very rich by working with government money. He made a large fortune financing government borrowing. Later, he lived on a large estate in Gloucestershire. He even became a member of Parliament for Portarlington. In Parliament, he worked hard to change laws for the better. He was a reformer who wanted fairer rules for everyone. He also spoke out against slavery, calling it a stain on the nation. He even voted to change laws about the death penalty.

Ricardo died in 1823 when he was 51 years old. He died from an ear infection that became very serious. He left behind a very large amount of money. His ideas about free trade eventually became official policy in Britain. This means the government began to follow his advice on trade. His work helped shape the modern way we buy and sell things. He showed that the way we trade can help the whole world grow.
