Malthus was born in a place called Westcott in Surrey. His family had a long history of working as apothecaries for kings. He grew up in a large family with six siblings. Even though he had a cleft lip that affected his speech, he had a very strong voice. His friend Harriet Martineau said she could hear him clearly without an ear trumpet.

In 1798, Malthus published a very famous book. It was titled "An Essay on the Principle of Population."

This book explained his ideas about how many people live on Earth. He believed that food production grows slowly in a steady way. However, he said that human populations grow much faster. He called this a trap because more food might just lead to more people. This would eventually bring the food supply back down to a low level. This idea became known as the "Malthusian trap."

His ideas were often quite serious and sometimes sad. Malthus thought that if populations grew too large, people might face hard times. He believed this could lead to famine, disease, or war.

He wrote these things because he disagreed with other thinkers of his time. Many people then believed that society was always getting better and more perfect. Malthus argued that population growth was a natural limit to that progress. As a church leader, he even thought these limits were part of a divine plan.

Many famous people studied the work of Malthus. The scientist Charles Darwin read his books. Alfred Russel Wallace also studied his ideas.

Even American presidents like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison read his writings. Malthus also had big debates with other thinkers like David Ricardo. They argued about how land and money work in an economy. These discussions helped shape how people thought about politics and science for a long time.

Today, many people look back at Malthus and see where he was wrong. He did not predict the Industrial Revolution. This was a time when new machines and tools helped grow much more food. Modern science also uses things like genetically modified organisms to increase food supplies.

His math was also based mostly on what was happening in England. Other places, like Australia, might have much more food than they need. Still, his ideas remain a part of how we talk about hunger and the world.
