Léon Walras was a very important French thinker. He was a mathematical economist. This means he used math to study how people use money and goods. He wanted to understand how different markets work together. He called this idea general equilibrium. This means all markets reach a balance at the same time.

He thought economics was like a science. He compared it to the way planets move in space. This helped make economics a very precise field of study.

Walras used a special way to think about value. He believed value came from rarity. This means how hard it is to find something compared to how much people want it. He used a process called tâtonnement to explain how markets find balance. This is a French word for "trial and error." He imagined an auctioneer helping people find the right prices. The auctioneer tries different prices until supply and demand match perfectly. This helps the whole market reach a steady state.

Walras had many different jobs in his life. He was the son of Auguste Walras, who was a school administrator. His father also had big ideas about how society works. Before becoming a professor, Léon worked in many places. He was a bank manager and a railway clerk. He even worked as a journalist and wrote romantic novels. Later, he became a professor at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. He helped start what people call the Lausanne school of economics.

His most famous work was a book called Éléments d'économie politique pure. He published parts of it in 1874 and 1877. This book was very hard for many people to read back then. It was also mostly written in French. Because of this, many people did not know his ideas for a long time. In 1954, a man named William Jaffé translated it into English. This helped more people around the world study his work. He also created Walras's law. This law says that if almost all markets are in balance, the last one must be too.

Many famous economists have used his ideas to build new theories. People like Vilfredo Pareto and Knut Wicksell studied his work. Later, thinkers like Kenneth Arrow and Gérard Debreu used math to explain his ideas even better. Even though he worked alone, he helped start the marginalist revolution. This was a big change in how people thought about value. Today, his ideas about how markets reach balance are still very important. We still use his mathematical tools to understand the world.
