Hermann Heinrich Gossen was a German economist who changed how we think about choices. He is famous for developing a theory called marginal utility. This idea looks at how much satisfaction a person gets from something. It focuses on the value of each extra piece of something we use. Before Gossen, other thinkers like Gabriel Cramer and Jules Dupuit studied similar ideas. However, Gossen was the first to explain the whole theory in great detail. His work helps us understand the rules behind human actions.

To understand his work, we look at how people use goods. Marginal utility explains the feeling of satisfaction we get from things. Each new item we use might give us a little less joy than the one before. This happens because we eventually get enough of what we need. Gossen used math to show these patterns in human behavior. He believed these patterns were like laws of nature. His ideas connect how we produce things to how we consume them.

Gossen was born on September 7, 1810, in Düren. At that time, Düren was part of the First French Empire. This was because of wars between France and Prussia. His father was Georg Joseph Gossen, and his mother was Maria Anna Mechtilde Scholl. His grandfather, Arnold Winand Gossen, was a respected tax collector in the region. Hermann studied at the University of Bonn during his youth. Later, he worked for the Prussian government until 1847.

In 1854, Gossen published his major book. The full title was *Entwicklung der Gesetze des menschlichen Verkehrs*. It was a very dense book filled with math. Because of this style, many people in Germany did not like it. They preferred a different way of thinking called the Historical School. Gossen was so upset by this that he ordered his books destroyed. Luckily, the publisher kept some copies in storage instead. These books were later found and re-issued in 1889.

Today, we see that Gossen was a very important thinker. Even though his book was forgotten for a while, it was rediscovered. In the 1870s, other economists like Carl Menger and Léon Walras also wrote about these ideas. One copy of his book once sold for $15,000 at an auction. His work is now used to study how people use time and goods. We can see his influence in how we study modern economics today. He showed us that even small choices follow important rules.
