Hermann Heinrich Gossen was a German economist. He was born in 1810 in a city called Düren. At that time, Düren was part of France. Later, the land became part of Prussia. Gossen studied at the University of Bonn. He worked for the Prussian government for many years. Later in life, he sold insurance.

Gossen wrote a famous book in 1854. The book had a very long name. It was about how people act and make choices. He wrote about marginal utility. This is the idea of how much joy or use we get from things. Gossen used many math rules in his writing. This made his book very hard to read.

Because his book was so hard, many people ignored it. Gossen felt very sad about this. He even ordered all his books to be destroyed. The books were not all destroyed, though. They were put in storage for many years. Later, people found the books again. They saw that his ideas were very important. Today, we study his work to understand how people use things and time.
