Reinhard Selten was a famous German economist. He spent his life studying how people make choices. This field of study is called game theory. He was a very important thinker in this area. He also helped start a field called experimental economics. This means using real tests to see how economics works.

Selten's work often looked at how people act in groups. He studied something called bounded rationality. This is the idea that people cannot always make perfect choices. They have limits on what they can think about at once. He also studied aggregative games. He even created a special example called Selten's Horse. This helped people see how different choices connect to each other.

Selten was born on October 5, 1930. He was born in Breslau, which is now called Wrocław in Poland. His father was a blind bookseller named Adolf Selten. His mother was named Käthe Luther. After a war, his family moved back to Hesse, Germany. When he was a student, he read about game theory in a magazine. This changed his life forever.

He studied math at Goethe University Frankfurt. He earned his diploma in 1957 and his doctorate in 1961. Selten taught at many different schools. He was a professor at the Free University of Berlin. He also taught at the University of Bielefeld. Later, he worked at the University of Bonn. There, he built the BonnEconLab to do research.

In 1994, Selten won a very big prize. It was the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this honor with John Harsanyi and John Nash. He was the first German to win this prize for economics. Selten also loved the Esperanto language. He met his wife, Elisabeth Langreiner, through the Esperanto movement. He passed away on August 23, 2016.
