He studies a field called behavioral economics. This field mixes economics with psychology. Psychology is the study of how people think and feel. For a long time, many economists believed people were like computers. They thought people always made perfect, logical choices. Thaler showed that humans are often much more complex. We can be messy and make mistakes. His work helps us understand why people act the way they do.

Thaler discovered several interesting ways that people handle money and objects. One idea is called the endowment effect.

This means we value things more just because we own them. We might pay more for an item if it is already ours. He also studied mental accounting. This is how we sort money into different groups in our heads. We might treat a birthday gift differently than a regular paycheck. These mental groups change how we spend and save our money.

Thaler has had a long and successful career in teaching. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1945. He went to Case Western Reserve University for his first degree in 1967. Later, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1974. He taught at the University of Rochester and Cornell University for many years. In 1995, he joined the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He has worked there as a professor ever since. He even served as the president of the American Economic Association in 2015.

His research has helped create new ways to guide people toward better choices. He calls this idea choice architecture. This is how the way options are presented can change our decisions. He uses the word "nudge" to describe a small push. A nudge helps people make good choices without taking away their freedom. For example, many companies sign workers up for savings plans automatically. This makes it easy to save for the future. People can still choose to opt out if they want to.

Thaler has written many books to explain these ideas to everyone. He wrote a book called Misbehaving about the history of his field. He also wrote Nudge with his partner, Cass Sunstein. This book explains how small changes can help people with health and wealth. In 2017, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. This is one of the highest honors in the world. His work built a bridge between economics and psychology. He showed that understanding human feelings is key to understanding the economy.
