William Nordhaus is a famous American economist. He was born on May 31, 1941, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father, Robert J. Nordhaus, helped start the Sandia Peak Tramway.

Nordhaus grew up in a family with deep roots. His grandfather, Max Nordhaus, moved to America from a place called Paderborn in 1883. This history shaped the world Nordhaus lives in today. He spent many years studying how people use money and resources. He eventually became a professor at Yale University.

Nordhaus is best known for studying how the economy and the climate work together.

He created special tools called the DICE and RICE models. These are called integrated assessment models. They show how energy use and the climate affect each other. He also looks at how nature affects money. For example, he studies how rainfall and temperature impact farming and forests. He wants to understand the link between our money and our planet. This work helps us think about our future.

His journey in learning was very long and impressive.

He went to Phillips Academy in Andover to start his studies. Then, he went to Yale University for his bachelor's and master's degrees. He earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also known as MIT, in 1967. He even spent time studying in Cambridge, England, at Clare Hall. Since 1967, he has been a teacher at Yale. He has also held important jobs for the government and at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Nordhaus has written many important books and articles.

He helped write a very popular textbook called "Economics" with Paul Samuelson. This book has nineteen different editions and is used in many languages. He has written more than 20 books in total. One of his famous books is "Managing the Global Commons," which won an award in 2006. He also came up with the idea of a "climate club." This is a group of countries that work together to protect the earth. They might use fees to help make sure everyone follows the rules.

In 2018, Nordhaus received a very big honor.

He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this prize with another economist named Paul Romer. The prize was for his work on how the economy and the climate interact. Some people have different ideas about his work. They debate his views on carbon taxes and how much climate change will cost. Even with these debates, his work is used by many people around the world. He helps us see how the market and nature are connected.
