Alvin E. Roth is a famous professor who uses math to solve real problems. He studies a field called market design. This is the study of how to match people together fairly. It is not just about buying things in a store. It is about finding the best way to connect people who need something with people who can provide it.

His work helps make sure that important systems work well for everyone involved. He believes that as the world changes, we must create new rules to match those changes.

One of his most important jobs is helping people who need kidney transplants. Sometimes, a person wants to give a kidney to a loved one, but the bodies do not match. Roth helped create a system called kidney exchange to fix this. In this system, two pairs of people can swap donors to help each other. This way, everyone gets a healthy kidney.

He even worked on global kidney exchanges. These programs help connect patients from different countries. This can help people in places where medical care is very expensive.

Roth also uses his math skills to help students find the right schools. In the past, matching students to schools in New York City and Boston was hard. Students often had to hide their true favorite schools to get a good spot. This was not very fair to the families. Roth worked with other experts to create a better way to match students. This new way uses a special math rule called an algorithm. Now, students can list their true choices without being punished by the system.

He has also done great work for doctors. When medical students finish their training, they need to find a hospital to work in. There is a big program called the National Resident Matching Program that does this. Roth studied this system in 1984. Later, he helped redesign it in the 1990s. He made sure the system could even match married couples to hospitals efficiently. This helps the whole medical field run much more smoothly.

Because his ideas save lives and help society, Roth received many honors. In 2012, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this huge prize with another scientist named Lloyd Shapley. They were honored for their work on stable allocations and market design.
