Hermann Ebbinghaus was a German psychologist who changed how we study the human mind. Before his work, most people studied memory by just observing or guessing. Ebbinghaus wanted to use real science and experiments instead. He is famous for being a pioneer in the experimental study of memory. This means he was one of the first to test how the brain works using strict rules.

To make his tests fair, Ebbinghaus had to use very special sounds. He did not use real words like "ball" or "dot." He used real words because he already knew their meanings. If he used real words, his old knowledge might help him remember. Instead, he created 2,300 nonsense syllables. These were three-letter combinations like "DAX" or "BOK." Since they had no meaning, he had to rely only on his memory.

Ebbinghaus was actually the only person participating in his own experiments. He would pull syllables from a box and write them down. Then, he read them out loud to himself using a metronome for a steady beat. He wanted to see how many times he had to repeat a list to learn it. He also studied how much information we lose over time. This discovery is called the forgetting curve. It shows that we lose information very quickly at first. The sharpest drop happens in the first twenty minutes.

His life was full of many different experiences. He was born on January 24, 1850, in Barmen, Prussia. He studied history and philosophy at the University of Bonn. He even served in the Prussian Army during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. In 1885, he published his most famous work, "Memory: A Contribution to Experimental Psychology." He later became a professor at the University of Berlin. He eventually moved to the University of Breslau and later to Halle.

Many of his ideas are still used in schools today. He discovered the serial position effect, which explains why we remember the start and end of a list best. The first items are called primacy, and the last items are called recency. He also found something called "savings." This is when you relearn something much faster than the first time. Even if you think you forgot everything, your brain still holds onto some information. His work helped start the modern way we study how people learn.
