Bernheim followed a clear path to become a teacher. He went to a school called the Johanneum. He graduated from that school in September 1868. After that, he studied history in three different cities. He went to Berlin, Heidelberg, and Straßburg. He earned two doctor degrees in Straßburg in 1873. During the Nazi era, Bernheim faced many hard times. He was of Jewish descent. This meant the government treated him very unfairly. In 1933, he was forbidden to teach his students. In 1935, the Nuremberg Laws caused him to lose his German citizenship. Some scientists at his university tried to help him. They asked the leaders to let him keep his citizenship. This worked in 1938, and it helped him avoid deportation in 1940.
