Leopold von Ranke was a very important German historian.

He lived from 1795 to 1886. Many people call him the father of modern history. Before his time, history books were often just lists of facts. Ranke wanted to change how we learn about the past. He believed we should tell history "as it really happened." This means looking for the true story of what people did. He wanted to find the real truth behind every event.

Ranke created a new way to study the past. He used something called primary sources. These are original items from the time an event happened. He looked at diaries, personal letters, and government papers. He also studied diplomatic dispatches and eye-witness accounts. He did not want to just read what other historians said. Instead, he wanted to see the actual evidence for himself. This way of working is called empiricism. It helps make sure history is based on real facts.

His career began with a big book in 1824. This book was about the Latin and Teutonic peoples. It used many different kinds of sources. Because his work was so good, he got a job at the University of Berlin. He stayed there as a professor for nearly fifty years. He started teaching there in 1825. He also used a special teaching method called a seminar. In these seminars, students worked together to study old documents. They learned how to check if a source was true.

Ranke traveled and studied many different places. He was the first to use the large archives of Venice. These archives had forty-seven volumes of old records. He also wrote about the history of the papacy in Rome. Even though he was a Protestant, he studied these religious records deeply. He wrote many large books about different lands. He wrote about France, England, and Germany. He even wrote about the history of the Reformation. His books were very long and filled with many details.

Ranke's ideas changed how we see the world today. He believed that every time period is unique. He said that one age is not better than another. For example, the Middle Ages were not worse than the Renaissance. He thought every period should be understood on its own. He also believed that God's actions were seen in history. This view shaped how he wrote about the German Empire. He was very famous and received many honors. In 1865, he was even given a special title of nobility.
