He spent his life thinking about big ideas in politics. He studied how people live together and what makes a good life. His work changed how many people in the United States study history and ideas. He focused on the way people thought in ancient and medieval times. Many scholars still talk about his work in universities today. He wanted to understand the deep questions of human nature and justice.

Strauss had a very specific way of reading old books. He believed that many ancient writers used a secret method called esoteric writing.

This means they hid their true, deep teachings behind plain words. They did this to stay safe from people who might punish them. They also wanted to teach their ideas only to readers who were ready for them. Strauss called this long talk between thinkers across history "the great conversation." He invited his students to join this massive, ongoing discussion.

Strauss was born on September 20, 1899, in Kirchhain, Germany.
