Moacyr Scliar was a famous Brazilian writer and a doctor. He wrote over 100 books in Portuguese. These books included short stories, novels, and essays. He even wrote books for children and young adults.

Much of his writing focused on Jewish identity. He explored what it meant to be Jewish while living in Brazil. This is often called the Diaspora. Scliar used his stories to show these different worlds. He wanted readers to understand the lives of his people.

Scliar lived two different lives through his work and his studies. He graduated in medicine in 1962. He focused his studies on public health.

He worked at the Jewish Hospital for the Elderly in Porto Alegre. Later, he worked to prevent and treat tuberculosis. He also wrote many stories about being a doctor. One of his first books was called Stories of a Doctor in Training. He published this book in 1962. He later felt he was perhaps too young when he wrote it.

Scliar was born on March 23, 1937, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. His family had moved to Brazil from Bessarabia in 1919.

He spent much of his life thinking about his many identities. He once described feeling like a centaur. A centaur is a creature that is half-man and half-horse. To Scliar, this meant having two identities at once. At home, he might eat gefilte fish or celebrate Shabbat. In the streets, he enjoyed samba and soccer.

His books reached readers in many different countries. His fiction was translated into English, French, and Hebrew. It was also in Dutch, German, Spanish, and many other languages.

One of his most famous novels is Max and the Cats. It was published in 1981. The story follows a man fleeing the Nazis. His ship sinks, and he ends up in a small boat with a jaguar. Another important book is The Centaur in the Garden. This book was named one of the 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature.

Scliar received many honors for his skill as a writer. In 2003, he became a lifetime member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

In 2009 and 2010, he was recognized by the São Paulo Prize for Literature. He was even a member of a final jury for this prize. Scliar passed away on February 27, 2011. He left behind a huge collection of stories. His work helps us see how people balance different cultures every day.
