Moacyr Scliar was a famous writer from Brazil. He was also a doctor. He studied public health to help people stay well. He worked to stop diseases like tuberculosis.

Scliar wrote more than 100 books. He wrote stories for adults and children. Many of his books were about being Jewish in Brazil. He used a centaur to explain this feeling. A centaur is a creature that is half-man and half-horse. Scliar felt like a centaur because he had two identities. At home, he followed Jewish traditions. In the streets, he lived the Brazilian way.

One of his most famous books is called Max and the Cats. It tells a story about a man on a ship. The ship sinks, and the man is in a small boat. He is not alone, though. He is with a jaguar!

People all over the world read his work. His stories are translated into many languages. This includes English, French, and Hebrew. In 2003, he became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. This is a very big honor for a writer.
